Farmers marketeers get OK

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

The Estelline City Council voted to allow vendors who live in South Dakota to participate in the Estelline Farmers Market without having to obtain a city Peddlers License. This action removes another burden from Dakotans who wish to sell their produce in Estelline’s Farmers Market.

Missoula Childrens’ Theater Presents the Musical “Wiz of the West”

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Two performances of the show will be held in the school auditorium evenings of July 11th and 12th (air-conditioned comfort will be welcome then even if we don’t think about it now).

Children ages 8 to 18 will audition for parts after the directors arrive with their trailer of props, costumes, and scripts on July 6th.  The short rehearsal time is made possible by the directors playing the main roles and the children’s parts being”so catchy and fun it all comes together”.

Watch for tickets ($5 for adults) and volunteer opportunities before the 4th of July.

Farmer’s Market Set

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Friday evenings 4-7pm starting June 20, 2008, Estelline Horizons will sponsor vendors of produce and flowersand crafts from those things, eggs, poultry, and (if we can locate and use a community commercial kitchen) value-added produce and baked goods.  Location provided by the Estelline Coop Grain Co is the site of the aluminum recycling trailer at the south end of Main Street.  Rules and Regulations, and Vendor Applications for the market were defined by the committee and will be available in print format soon.  Persons who grow their own materials within a 100 mile distance of town are qualified to participate.   A manager for the Market is needed still.

Farmer’s Market Education Enjoyable; More Opportunities SOON

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Saturday’s meeting with Rhoda Burrows was attended by 10 community members, some new to Horizons.  We were impressed by the amount and helpfulness of the materials she shared, and much of it was left with us for reference.  Rhoda is also very interested in responding to further questions when we figure out what we need to know!

Next educational opportunity is this coming Saturday;  the venue for the Permaculture presentation has moved across the street to the American Legion Hall,  due to the Sr Citizen dinner, meeting, and games scheduled in conflict.  We hope some Seniors will come across the street for the educational session after their activity.

And speaking of Senior opportunities,  anyone 60 years of age or better is invited for BBQ and salad supper evening of the 24th  (that would be tomorrow, Monday) sponsored by an aging grant which is wanting your input in improving wellness and health services;  show up to have your say.

See you there?

I do not know if anyone else put the crew up that completed the Leadership Plenty Series last fall with the “Can Do” T-shirts but I have one to share with the group!  Again, since I attended the blog traning, I am trying to catch up by sharing some photos.

I learned how to blog this week at the blog training in Estelline from Cheryl and am sharing photos of the group that attended the program last September in Huron.   Harvey was part of the panel discussion of communities attending and represented the Estelline Horizons group extremely well.

Whopper of a Celebration

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Welcome , especially if you arrived at the blog using the pen or clip you got at the Strategic Plan Celebration! Turnout for the game and Whopper feed (burgers eaten –700) brought a large number of cpmmunity members together January 25th. The school space was decorated with pictures of Horizons Projects and groups as well as the Plans and blue fridge clips and bluegrip design black ink pens on a balloon flanked table. If you did not get a Plan or handout, ask at the bank.
“Where do I sign up” takes some time to select from the many options. Turn in your volunteer sheet at the bank also, or speak to the other Horizons volunteers to get involved.
We were fortunate to have Extension representatives Kari, Carla and Cheryl from SDSU as well as Sandra from Hamlin County. Their Northwest Area Foundation inout has started us on the next Horizons projects with confidence. Our goal of alternative energy development has found an oopoportunity -the school is a possible site for a Wind for Schools turbine thru the Wind Powering America program and we have qualified volunteers ready to support the education and economic facets of the installation. What a great opportunity to celebrate at Celebration! Host schools will be selected by February 15th; watch the blog for future activity in alternative energy.

Clinic Hours and Staff Face Cuts

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Heads up!

Sanford Management proposes slashing clinic hours by 1/2 and comparable reduction in employee hours. Talk to Mike W if you are able to help; letters in support of the clinic need to be collected and used at a meeting Monday, January 14th.

Horizons survey supports more services; our letter follows …

11 January 2008
To: Stanford Clinic Management
From: Linda Svec, Community Member and Strategic Planning Committee of Northwest Area Foundation Estelline Horizons program

Regarding: Clinic hours proposed reduction

This community opposes cutting access to Estelline Clinic from 40 to 20 hours per week.

Availability of services is a critical feature in quality of life. In an effort to address issues of poverty (many of which are delineated by access as well as finances), our program surveyed more than 20% of the community. Compilation completed January 2008 indicated more services, not less, were desirable; several entries even requested 24 hour on call health service.

Before instituting the proposed reductions, we request thorough revaluation of the situation and assistance in making the current clinic improved and viable.
